Two aspects of God’s will

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. That you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing him.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Colossians 1:9.10

Two aspects of God's will
By reading the Bible, we discover that God's will on certain subjects is revealed clearly and universally, while on others it is individual and linked to the circumstances of our life. It is His universal will that we should "rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you", or "abstain from every form of evil" (1 Thessalonians 5:22).

The other aspect of God's will is more personal, for God takes a great interest in each one of us. Understanding it necessitates sincerely wishing to please Him.

To know God's will in a particular situation we must learn to listen to the Saviour's voice. When we read a passage from the Bible, we need to allow the Word to act on our heart, our conscience and our life. It must shed light on our intentions and wishes. When reading it, let us ask the Lord to make us sensitive to what it says and to act accordingly. For one person this will mean acknowledging a wrong, for another making a decision, for a third thanking God for what He has granted.

Prayer is important in seeking God's will. By speaking to Him about our life, our worries or mistakes, we are encouraged and instructed. When the time comes, He will naturally guide us in whatever choice or decision we make.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 52:1-16 · Romans 16:1-16
