Hearing Jesus’ call, Levi stood up without...

He (Jesus) saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And he said to him, Follow me. So he left all, rose up, and followed him. Then Levi gave him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them.
Luke 5:27-29

Hearing Jesus' call, Levi stood up without hesitating. How clearly, gently and yet determinedly the look and the voice of the Master moved him. Until then Levi took responsibility in his profession, but he could not resist that extraordinary command. He left all to follow the Lord Jesus.

Obedience is the first step of faith. Everyone must obey the voice of God, who commands all to repent. And obedience marks the second step, too. We must obey the Lord's call to all His disciples to follow Him. Serving such a Master who calls us His friends brings joy and blessing with it. (cf. John 15:15).

That obedient tax collector became one of the twelve apostles and the writer of the first gospel. Levi is none other than Matthew.

A further fruit of faith is love. Jesus, the Son of God, first loved us. Now we love Him and our neighbours (1 John 4:19). Levi's love of his Lord motivated him to prepare a great feast for Him. His love of others prompted him to invite his neighbours and colleagues, so that they could get to know Jesus. The criticism of the religious leaders did not trouble him. His acquaintances needed the Saviour, and Jesus had come for them.

It is no different for us: the more I grasp how great God's grace has been towards me, the more I want others to share it.

Today's reading: Leviticus 26:34-46 · Psalm 72:1-7

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
