Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (186)

I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38.39

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (186)
Alongside the difficulties and enemies in the visible world (cf. vv. 35 & 36) there are powers in the invisible world, about which we know very little. One might imagine that they can cause much harm to the Christian. And threats that we cannot fathom naturally arouse more fear than evils that we know and whose effects we understand.

Visible dangers cannot separate believers from the love of Christ, since He Himself experienced such suffering as a Man here on earth. In the case of invisible powers the love of God comes into the foreground.

God's love is possibly less appreciable than Christ's love. Yet it is just as unchangeable and immeasurable. And none of the invisible powers can separate Christians from it. "In Christ Jesus our Lord" rests God's love towards believers. It was in Christ that God's love came down to them; and now they are "in him". For this reason they remain constantly in the sphere of God's love.

The first verse of this chapter stresses that "there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus". The final verse assures the Christian that "nothing can separate" him "from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord".

How inconceivably great is the salvation that is granted to the believer! It embraces our entire existence and is eternally secure.

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
