A despondent couple were on their way from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Their hopes for the future were dashed. The leaders of the people had crucified Jesus of Nazareth, their Master whom they had followed until then. What now?

Maybe you are in a similar situation. You had hopes, but now disappointment has made you downcast and desperate.

Many things can make us despair when hopes dwindle: business failure despite all our exertion and sacrifice. Or we experience disappointments in our marriage and family. The joy we once knew has disappeared. A vacuum remains and hopelessness, from which we cannot escape. Or we despair over ourselves. Where is the person we imagined ourselves to be: strong, kind and ready to make sacrifices? "Look at me now!" we say dejectedly.

Let us return to the couple on the road to Emmaus. Suddenly a man joined them, whom they thought to be a stranger. Yet it was the Lord Jesus Himself. He was no longer in the tomb but had risen! He was alive! What joy replaced the despair of those two Christians! The hope they thought dashed revived through the Lord's presence. They now felt secure for the present and the future.

The resurrected Lord is there for you, too. He will bring new hope into your life. Reveal your situation to Him, telling Him everything, and starting anew with Him. He will be your hope, too, for He is the only certain hope for everyone. You can rely on Him and His promises.
