A very gloomy mood often prevailed in a house in the country. Marital quarrels hardly ever ceased; the children became accustomed to it. One day a Christian from the village entered the house only to witness one such argument..

The father apologised immediately: "We are hard up, you see. That is our problem. Every expenditure leads to a quarrel."

The visitor looked round and discovered a large Bible on a shelf. He then said amicably but emphatically: "Dear friends, you own a treasure. You could be the happiest family in the village." Having expressed these mysterious words, he took his leave and left the amazed couple. They wondered what he had meant. The visitor had made a serious impression. They searched the house again and again but could find no treasure. They eventually came to the conclusion that he had been joking.

One day, however, the housewife noticed the Bible. Could that be "the treasure"? Knowing the visitor, she could well believe it. She wiped the dust off and opened the book after years of neglect. Her glance soon fell on a sentence that her mother had often quoted: "The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold or silver." Her curiosity made her start reading.

When her husband arrived home, she told him: "I have found the treasure. It's here in this book. Let's read it from now on." They did so with resulting blessing for the whole family.
