Thoughts on the Gospel of John (24)

The Jews answered and said to him, What sign do you show to us, since you do these things? Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then the Jews said, It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you will raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the temple of his body. Therefore, when he had risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this to them; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
John 2: 18 - 22.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (24)
The Lord Jesus' purification of the temple by driving out both people and cattle made the Jews wonder whether His action was in accordance with the prophecies of the Old Testament. If so, Jesus could be the promised Messiah. So they demanded a sign. As if the Son of God's authoritative action did not prove His presence among them!

The Lord answered the Jews in symbolical language, calling His body a temple: "in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" (Colossians 2: 9). The temple in Jerusalem was "their house" void of godliness and it faced destruction (cf. Matthew 23: 38; 24: 2), which actually happened in 70 A.D..

"Destroy this temple" points to their enmity. They would capture and crucify Jesus. Man's wicked dealing with the Son of God would be His opportunity to reveal His divine glory: He would "raise it up" again by rising from the dead. What power the Son of God had! Of all His signs, His resurrection was the greatest (cf. Romans 1: 4)

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: Numbers 1: 38 - 54 · Matthew 2: 1 - 12

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
