Thoughts on the Gospel of John (25)

Now when he (Jesus) was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself to them, because he knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for he knew what was in man.
John 2: 23 - 25.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (25)
"Seeing is believing" is a common saying; it was also the attitude of the Jews in Jesus' time. They had experienced impressive signs and miracles that Jesus had done; so they had no doubt that Jesus was all that He claimed to be. Therefore they believed in Him.

Mere faith based on facts that have been witnessed and thus cannot be denied is not saving faith. Scriptural faith is not limited to what our intelligence and senses recognise, but trusts God and His Word. Whoever truly believes in the Name of the Lord is aware that he needs Christ as Saviour. And that was what the crowds at the Passover feast lacked.

That is the reason why Jesus did not commit Himself to those people. It was not that He showed no love or mercy, it was their attitude: they did not want a relationship with Him.

We often are unaware of what our fellowmen think of us. But that is not so with the Son of God. . He is omniscient.

What a sorry picture of people this chapter paints! They are unable to ensure their own happiness; they misuse religious practices given by God; they show disrespect for the One who brings grace; and their superficial "faith" is restricted to what is visible. Such people are far from the Saviour.
