The atmosphere in the situation in which...

They (the Jews) said to him (Jesus), Who are you? And Jesus said to them, Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
John 8: 25.

The atmosphere in the situation in which the above words were spoken was tense. Jesus Christ was confronted by the religious leadership of the time, the Pharisees. They had been watching the Son of God closely wherever He went, waiting for the opportunity to accuse Him publicly before all; but so far they had failed. They noticed that that Man's reputation with the people could endanger their influence and their own position.
They had just brought a woman, an adulteress, to Jesus. According to the letter of the law she had to be stoned. They confronted Him with the situation in order to find some reason to accuse Him. But Jesus saw through their sanctimony and hypocrisy and exposed them. His response cut them to the heart: "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." They had not expected that! One by one they left the scene. When the Son of God was left alone with the woman, He could deal with her personally.

The religious leaders realised that they had been pronounced guilty; so in their dispute with Jesus they challenged Him: "Who are you?" His reply, "Just what I have been saying to you", was astonishing. It meant: in my case, my heart, my words and my deeds all correspond to my Person.

We are accustomed to false appearances and words not corresponding to deeds. With the Lord Jesus things are otherwise. He speaks the truth and keeps His promises.
