God is love. This is his commandment: that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another. Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

A book of surprises (1)
At the beginning of the 20th century a missionary arrived on a Japanese island. In a small village there he met two brothers, Shosei and Majan and gave them a Bible as a present.

The two started reading it. One morning Shosei said to his brother: "This book is full of surprises! It says here that we should practise love and serve one another. Let's begin living according to the ideas in it from today and always do what it says!"

The next days a beggar passed by; they invited him in and gave him something to eat. When he expressed his amazement they explained: "We're just reading a book that tells us that there is a God of love who is like a Father to us. He only wants what is good for us; so He sent His Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins."

The beggar wanted to hear more from that book and, from then on, sat at the entrance of the two brothers' hut every day to listen to what they read out of the book. Soon others joined, so that there was quite an audience. Many understood what was read, and more and more villagers decided to follow Jesus Christ. Gradually the character of the village changed: old habits disappeared, and their former cult was abandoned. Now people helped each other, and there was seldom an argument.
