Unable to sleep (2)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1: 9.

Unable to sleep (2)
Her mother was dead! The daughter herself had persuaded her to drive home so late at night!

How guilty the young woman felt! Her conscience plagued her. She would never rid herself of that sense of guilt. In addition, she felt guilty before God. He would be justified in punishing her for all the wrong in her life. A dreadful period of her life began. She wanted to keep out of the sight of God and man. A host of self-reproaches made her despair. Was there no way out?

God came to her aid. He had been actively influencing her for a long time, as she later realised. There was that shop assistant at the baker's whose calm, friendly nature impressed her. She had somehow heard that she was a Christian. Now she remembered her. The next time she bought bread there she took courage and spoke to her. The sales assistant would be only too pleased to come with her husband to visit her. They had some long enjoyable conversations over their open Bibles.

However, the comfort of the Bible did not come automatically. Her guilt was too great, her self-reproaches too severe. Did the verses about the love of God, His forgiveness and eternal salvation apply to her? Only gradually did she learn that Christ came to save the lost like her "and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".

As the woman told us her story, we saw the joy in her face. She could say with assurance: "The Lord Jesus died out of love for me. He bore my guilt on the cross and put all things in order for me."
