It is almost inconceivable that this verse is to be...

We have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.
Isaiah 28: 15.

It is almost inconceivable that this verse is to be found in the Bible. This was the language of Israel's leaders. But what about ourselves today?

If we are frank and honest and can scrutinize what we and our fellowmen say, we shall have to admit that we do not speak absolute truth. Many people live according to principles that concern mere practicability or their own wishes. We adapt our ethics and behaviour to the circumstances, and that makes it more and more difficult for us to regard lying as sin. Some hold the view that one cannot get through life unscathed without lying. Whoever makes "the whole truth and nothing but the truth" his motto becomes an outsider in society.

Now what about God's view of the matter? He by no means shares these opinions. He makes it clear that our speech should be: . Anything going beyond that is evil.

We need to change our easy-going attitude to lying and treat it as God sees it: as sin! We have, so to speak, listed sins in order of their gravity, as we judge them, but that is wrong. To suppress or twist the truth is tantamount to lying. We can only clear our conscience of all this if we confess our sins to God and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to help us live according to truth.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 5: 1 - 12 · Ephesians 6: 1 - 9

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
