Physical and moral beauty

How great is its goodness, and how great its beauty!

This is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have eternal life.

Zecharaiah 9: 17; John 6: 40 (J.N.D.).

Physical and moral beauty
"How wonderful!" These words easily come across our lips when we contemplate the setting sun, a panorama of mountains or the rolling waves of the ocean. We are exceedingly appreciative as to beauty; with the believer it calls forth both spontaneous praise for God our Creator, His power and greatness and gratitude for His goodness. He wanted His creature, man, to lead his life amid beautiful, varied and living nature.

It is a remarkable thing that these words are also expressed when we witness a particularly generous, selfless or courageous action. So there must exist a moral beauty that also calls forth our wonder. Goodness, uprightness, dedication, kindness - these are virtues that, like colours, compose a morally harmonious scene.

Moral beauty of this kind was revealed when Jesus Christ walked on this earth. It was said of Him: . His ways were perfectly balanced and He revealed untiring love. He knew how to speak to the humble and reply to the great. He was gentle and yet firm at one and the same time.

Today we are able to contemplate Him by reading the gospels - an important activity that we should not neglect. Being a Christian means admiring Jesus, recognising Him as the Son of God and believing in Him. We must have faith that His work on the cross is sufficient to save us, believe His sayings that give us life, entrust ourselves wholly to Him and walk in His ways.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 12: 16 - 13: 5 · Psalms 95: 1 - 11
