In the Spanish-American war (1898) Theodore Roosevelt was the commander of a regiment of soldiers. The provision of food being sparse, many men were ill. Roosevelt then learned that the Red Cross had obtained fresh fruit and vegetables. He inquired whether he might purchase some and was prepared to pay for it himself. However, they would not sell him any. When he complained, someone said to him, "Just try asking them!" Roosevelt was taken aback and said with a smile, "Is it as easy as that? Then I now ask for some food!" And he received it, free of charge.
