The abuse of social welfare

Be sure your sin will find you out.

I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: afflicting the just and taking bribes; diverting the poor from justice in the gate.

Numbers 32: 23; Amos 5: 12.

The abuse of social welfare
The media report all too often that persons in high office are prosecuted for "the abuse of social welfare". What have they done? Those responsible, caught up in the whirlwind of business and success, have mistaken what actually belongs to them with what belongs to others or the state.

They are considered honest and perhaps believed themselves to be so. Other people do likewise after all! But one day the judicial system intervenes, and things change. Initially they defend themselves, claim to be innocent and even accuse the magistrates. Soon, however, they have to change their tune and have their offices searched. Then come judgment and shame! Their make-believe is over; everyone knows the truth. The heroes of yesterday are the despised of today.

Similarly, before God's judgment throne everything will be revealed for every human being. At present, satisfied with appearances, people try to keep others off the right scent. Soon divine justice will reveal all. We may not have done anything scandalous in man's view, but before our holy God, who examines and judges our deeds and our most secret thoughts, we shall be guilty. What remedy shall we have there? None whatever! But if we plead guilty now, taking refuge under the cross of Christ, our sins will be forgiven. We shall not come into judgment, for Jesus has settled our case for us there.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 26: 13 - 25 · Philippians 4: 8 - 14

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
