Thoughts on the Gospel of John (49)

Many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who testified, He told me all that I ever did. So when the Samaritans had come to him, they urged him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his own word. Then they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard him and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
John 4: 39 - 42.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (49)
Who would have imagined that the Samaritans of Sychar would listen to that infamous woman? Not only that: because of her words they now even believed in Christ. First, the woman's testimony was decisive: "He told me all that I ever did."

This statement reveals two things:

Christ is that prophet, of whom Moses had already foretold that God would raise Him up . He is God Himself. He knows our life, our hearts, everything about us, in fact. And He tells us how He judges our life.
The Samaritan woman had accepted the Lord's verdict on her life. She admitted it without any reservation or excuse.
In this way many people have been led to Jesus Christ over the centuries. They were attracted by the visible change in others. But we must not leave it at that: everyone needs a personal encounter with Christ and must come to a conviction personally.

The Samaritans no longer believed because of the woman's but because of His own word. They needed no signs or miracles. His word gave them the assurance that Jesus is the Saviour of the world.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today‘s reading: 2 Samuel 13: 1 - 39 · 1 Samuel 5: 12 - 28
