God’s message to Baruch

Do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them.
Jeremiah 45: 5.

God's message to Baruch
God sent this personal message to Baruch, the scribe in the service of the prophet Jeremiah. He may well have hoped for honour and riches. After all, he mastered the art of writing and so fulfilled an important task.

But God looked into the depths of his soul and asked him this heart-searching question: "Do you seek great things for yourself?" Baruch felt that he had been seen through. He was now challenged to account for himself both to God and himself. God added an admonition to the question: "Do not seek them!"

How apt is the warning, which is also in the Bible: .

This piece of wisdom proved true in the autumn of 2008 for all whose wealth was invested in stocks and shares. Why? Because trust in the financial world, essential for the stock exchange, was lost, resulting in an unparalleled crash. Some people lost everything, others lost a lot. How tragic to put all one's eggs in one basket or, metaphorically, bet on the wrong horse!

Today God earnestly calls on us to "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6: 33). God does not want to withhold anything from us. But we must first get our priorities right. Then we shall learn how He cares for us.

Today‘s reading: 2 Kings 18: 1 - 25 · 1 John 4: 7 - 14

GOD PROMOTES

God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
