With these encouraging words God finished speaking to...

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1: 9.

With these encouraging words God finished speaking to Joshua, when the people of Israel were about to enter the land of Canaan. Until then Joshua had always been overshadowed by Moses, that great man of God. Shortly before his death Moses had laid his hands of Joshua, who was filled with the spirit of wisdom . Now, however, Joshua was alone at the head of a vast people

Was he alone? If he could no longer count on Moses, God was there, encouraging him. Humanly speaking, Joshua needed a good counsellor, so as to be able to carry out a successful siege and attack fortresses when necessary. But God did not order him to teach the Israelites the art of warfare or to provide weapons and shields. What Joshua needed was total subjection to God's direction. God said: "Be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law ; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go" (Joshua 1:7).

Joshua was to study the law assiduously in order to act accordingly. Then he need not be dismayed in the forthcoming battle against the Canaanites. He was not to be afraid nor be terrified by enemies.

Believers today are involved in the "fight of faith" against "the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6: 12). It is essential that we read the Word of God and understand His thoughts before acting. Then we shall be strong and need not fear the enemy or whatever opposes us.

Today‘s reading: Ezekiel 22: 1 - 31 · Psalms 124: 1 - 8
