Thoughts on the Gospel of John (26)

I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. This is the will of the Father who sent me, that of all he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:38.40.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (26)
These three verses deal with two aspects of the will of God the Father. In the first place we read of His will concerning Jesus Christ, His Son. Those whom the Father has chosen and given to His Son will be securely preserved by the Lord. Is it feasible that any of them could be lost? In no wise! All who come to Jesus by faith are granted perfect salvation from any power of evil. The Son of God guarantees it.

Additionally, the Son of God will raise His own up "at the last day" to bring them into their heavenly blessing. It may seem at present that generations of believers no longer alive are forgotten by people and even by God. But the Lord's word assures us that this is not so. None is lost or forgotten. All will appear "at the last day", when He raises them up as the ultimate proof that He has lost nothing.

Secondly, we read of the Father's will in connection with man's responsibility. Everyone who acknowledges Jesus as the Son of God, and not merely as a miracle worker, receives eternal life by believing on Him. This exceeds simply being lost by far. Eternal life means consciously enjoying a relationship with the Persons of the Godhead, something that will be fully apprehended, when believers are raised up "at the last day".

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Joel 2:1-17 · Proverbs 2:1-8
