The mystery of godliness (5)

Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles.
1 Timothy 3:16.

The mystery of godliness (5)
The first three statements about the Lord Jesus concern His life and work from His birth to the ascension. Now we shall consider a fact that has had great significance since the glorification of the Lord Jesus. It is .

It concerns the gospel, the good news that is made known: "He who believes and is baptised will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16:16). It is actually Christ Himself who is preached, not a doctrine, nor any philosophy or religion. A Person is the content of God's gospel, and He is to be made known and recommended to every nation. Therefore we read in Acts 8:5: "Philip preached Christ to them." (cf. also Romans 1:1-4).

Christ is not only the King promised to the Jewish nation. He is "the Saviour of the world" (John 4:42) at the same time. In Him "the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men" (Titus 2:11).

Everyone is appealed to. The writing on the cross in three languages made this clear enough: in Hebrew for the religious world, in Latin for the political world and in Greek for the cultural world. The Person and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ are too great for them to be limited to a single people. God made His Christ "a light to the Gentiles" to be "salvation to the ends of the earth" (Isaiah 49:6).

"We do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord" (2 Corinthians 4:5).

(to be continued next Wednesday)

Today's reading: Nehemiah 1:1-11 · Proverbs 10:11-21
