Excuses for ignoring the Bible

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18.

Excuses for ignoring the Bible
"I don't understand what I read."

Certain passages of the Bible may seem difficult to understand, being complicated or too abstract. The evangelist Spurgeon said: "It is wonderful to see how a text from the Bible that is hard like stone gives off sparks when struck by the steel of prayer." Before reading, ask God, who inspired the text, to give you understanding.

"Religion doesn't interest me."

The Bible is not a treatise of religious doctrines; it speaks to us of Jesus, the revelation of the living God. He said: . Will you forego the chance to discover what the eternal God wishes to reveal about Himself?

"I have a clear conscience, and am an honest person; I don't need anyone to preach morals to me."

By reading the Bible, you will discover that your honesty and merits bear no weight before the holiness of God. But you will also learn that God does not give you rules to follow in order to improve your conduct. He rather intends to transform you thoroughly to make you able to please Him.

"I neither want nor need to know an invisible God who takes no notice of me."

If God were not interested in you, He would not have given His Son to save you! But that is precisely what He has done, and the gospel is the wonderful story of the interest that He has in you. Don't simply pass by this loving message!

Today's reading: Nehemiah 13:1-14 · Proverbs 17:1-10
