Too proud for the Saviour

As he (Jesus) drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace.
Luke 19:41.42.

Too proud for the Saviour
Jesus Christ wept over the city of Jerusalem. Why? Because its inhabitants refused to acknowledge that He had come to them with the one purpose of truly helping them. In another place He laments: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! .

How many people today tell God outright: "I don't want to hear the gospel! I don't need the Saviour!" How must the Lord Jesus weep over such people! There is their debt of guilt with God on the one hand, and the cross of Calvary on the other. There Christ suffered for the guilt of others; there He died so that God can pardon sinful persons who turn to Him. Yet many say: "I don't want any grace. How sad it makes the Saviour that such people reject His offer of salvation so abruptly!

Why do so many refuse God's grace? Simply because they are too proud to accept such a gift. They will not admit that they are so bad and ruined and need a Saviour. But accepting divine grace goes hand in hand with a confession of our own guilt and the recognition that we cannot redeem ourselves.

Today's reading: Nehemiah 13:15-31 · Proverbs 17:11-19

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
