Who can imagine himself in Joseph’s situation here! Though...

Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, ... where the king's prisoners were confined.
Genesis 39:20.

Who can imagine himself in Joseph's situation here! Though innocent, Joseph was condemned on the ground of a base lie. This must be one of the hardest trials to bear. Yet we read of no word by which he sought to justify himself. His life was in the hand of God who never errs in His leading and whose word eventually "tested him" (Psalm 105:19). Joseph never lost sight of this fact.
Peter wrote (1 Peter 2:19.20): "This is commendable, if because of conscience toward God, one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. ... But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God." Joseph's conduct under a false accusation sets us an example. We may not be slaves under a foreign power, and we have means of opposing blatant injustice, yet how sensitively we react for the slightest cause! A harsh word and we feel insulted. How would we behave, if falsely accused? We need to show the Lord's mind in what we do or refuse to do. Let us lay hold of the grace of the One who set us a perfect example, who "reviled, did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously" (1 Peter 2:23).

All that confronts us happens at God's instigation. This assurance gives us strength and consolation in every situation. And a strong faith raises us above all circumstances, for "in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37).

Today's reading: Genesis 6:1-12 · 1 Peter 3:8-17

The only true attitude for the Christian is that of dependence...

I am come from heaven, not that I should do My will, but the will of Him that has sent Me.
(John 6:38)

The only true attitude for the Christian is that of dependence. The moment we get off the ground of dependence on God we are sure to come to grief. This is true both individually...More

Are You Feeling Insecure? (3)

The Lordsaid to me, "Now, I have put my words in your mouth." '
Jeremiah 1:9 NIV

The people God calls usually start out feeling ill-equipped and insecure. Indeed, if you jumped and said, No problem, Lord, I can handle that,' He wouldn't call you at all. You say, but I've made so many...More
