The love of money

If riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content, for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

Psalm 62:10; 1 Timothy 6:7-10.

The love of money
When the passion for money occupies someone, he will never be satisfied, for money cannot bring true peace of mind, being a deceitful power. It claims to ensure security, but does not keep its promises.

Money, moreover, works havoc in man's heart; it wins his confidence, but often perverts the heart and assumes God's place there. The accumulation of wealth will never calm our mind or grant peace or joy. It cannot hinder illness nor offer any alternative when death faces us.

The New Testament tells believers how to break the power of perishable wealth by putting their faith for salvation in God, not money. Living to please Him and giving generously, we lay up treasure in heaven, the only secure bank (cf. 1 Timothy 6:17-19).

Comfort and riches are only bad, if we make them our objective in life. If we accept them as a gift from God, they contribute to sincere happiness and make us realise how grateful we must be to God, who ensures that we lack nothing. Let us not forget that He is the real owner of our possessions. We must ask Him how to use all that He has given us to please Him. Christians should constantly ask themselves, "Can I sincerely thank God for all that I possess and for the use that I put it to?"

Today's reading: Genesis 27:30-46 · Psalms 13:1-6
