A gigantic image with feet of clay

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.

The earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

Matthew 24:35; 2 Peter 3:10.

A gigantic image with feet of clay
Our title describes something that appears to be solid but in fact is very fragile. It is taken from an account in the Bible (Daniel ch. 2). Nebuchadnezzar, the head of the Chaldean empire, had a strange dream. He saw a great statue made of four different parts. The prophet Daniel was able to explain its meaning to him. He said that this giant with feet of clay represented four different successive empires that would all collapse on account of the weak basis. History confirmed his explanation.

This statue with feet of clay reminds us of the precariousness of all that man organises on earth. Is nothing solid and viable in our 21st century world? A philosopher has attested: "The only thing that is truly certain about the future is that we shall all die." This statement confirms what the Bible says: "All have sinned" and "thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 3:23; 5:12). Happily, this is not God's final word. He loves His creature and wishes to save him: "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

That is the solid foundation that saves from death and grants eternal life to all who believe on Him. Have you obtained this salvation and this hope as a gift of His grace? Jesus Himself guarantees that they will ever be secure.

Today's reading: Genesis 36:1-43 · Psalms 22:1-9

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
