Disappearance

O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your possessions.
Psalm 104:24.

Disappearance
The last known male white rhinoceros died in March 2018. This species, of which only two females remain; is in danger of dying out. "When I hear of the destruction of a species, for me it is like all the works of a great writer disappearing", said Theodore Roosevelt.

We do not know which writer he was thinking of. But are not the vegetal and animal species, in their extraordinary diversity, the works of God, that "great writer"? Each species is like a book, a masterpiece. These living works speak to us of the power and wisdom of God our Creator. They also speak of His love for us human beings, for it was for us that God conceived this luxurious earth and all that it contains.

We share Roosevelt's sadness when we admit that the negligent behaviour of the human race leads to the disappearance of species that will never revive. But there is another book written by God, another masterpiece: the Bible that some have often wanted to make disappear, but which "will not pass away".

What is our attitude regarding this wonder that God has left to mankind? Let us recognise it: we are too pre-occupied to take the time to consider it. It is as if all our activity and care are calculated to make this book disappear and sink into oblivion. It is God's testimony of love towards us. But it is never too late to start reading it. Are we prepared to do so?

Today's reading: Genesis 37:18-36 · Psalms 22:23-31
