Thoughts on the Gospel of John (47)

The officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not brought him? The officers answered, No man ever spoke like this man. Then the Pharisees answered, Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.
John 7:45-49.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (47)
Jesus' presence and His sayings enraged people. Some of His opponents wanted to arrest Him. But none dared to do so. Nothing can happen in this world, unless God allows it.

But there was another reason for the failure to take the Lord prisoner. The officers noticed from the Lord's language that He was more than an ordinary man. His sayings raised Him to a considerably higher class. The officers had presumably not understood all that the Lord had said, but their intuition did not deceive them.

Whoever has not yet been convinced that Jesus Christ is not only true Man, but also eternal God should read the four gospels attentively. The Sermon on the Mount alone shows what power His words have over our hearts.

The Pharisees here had neither any feelings for Jesus nor any misgivings. On the contrary, excessive overestimation of their authority characterised them. They considered their rejection of Him indisputable and final, so that everyone had to approve of it. Anyone who disagreed through ignorance was for them accursed.

Don't these officers prove to be more understanding than the Pharisees? They saw no fault in Jesus and therefore found no basis in the law for arresting Him.

May we never allow any authority to destroy our faith in the Lord Jesus!

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Genesis 50:15-26 · Psalms 37:1-11

UNCOVERING EVIL

The presence of the supernatural power of God in a church can take that church beyond limits.
It can also uproot the presence of evil in the midst of Gods children. In Acts 5, a couple were uprooted through this. If we are going to sanitise the church, we need the Holy Spirit. Just as we need Him to heal, save...More

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More
