Thoughts on the Gospel of John (54)

They said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus answered, You know neither me nor my Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. These words Jesus spoke in the treasury as he taught in the temple; and no-one laid hands on him, for his hour had not yet come.
John 8:19.20.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (54)
Jesus had spoken of His heavenly Father, who had sent Him and given witness of Him (ch. 5:37). Thereupon the Pharisees asked Him where His Father was. Could this be an indirect assertion that Joseph, Mary's husband was no longer alive? Their question reveals at any rate that they still denied the eternal, divine Sonship of Jesus Christ.

How earnest was the Lord's reply! The Pharisees' words and actions showed that they were totally estranged from the Father. Yet they had the prophecies of the Old Testament in their possession. "If you do not believe his (Moses') writings, how will you believe my words?" (John 5:47).

Whoever reads the Scriptures sincerely comes to Christ. And whoever comes to Christ by faith and gets to know Him, learns to know God the Father equally. This means that the incarnate Son of God is the perfect revelation of God in Person and therefore in the widest sense "the light of the world" (v. 12).

The Pharisees' resentment is fatal. But despite their intentions they are powerless, until His "hour" has come. The Lord alone determines when man can lay hands on Him. Had they known Him, "they would not have crucified the Lord of glory" (1 Corinthians 2:8). If you know the Son of God personally, then you are one of God's children. What a blessing!

(to be continued next Sunday)

Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their...More

TOTAL COMPLIANCE REQUIRED

When we teach about tithes and first fruits, some people think that it is the pastor's way of making money but they are making a great mistake. When you put God first, He will make sure that your blessings are irreversible. But if you decide to give Him second place in your life, you may not be happy to see what...More
