Intercession

Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Colossians 4:12.

Intercession
The believers in Colosse had opened their ears to the ingenious thinking of philosophers. They ran the danger of having their souls lured away from Christ and the Word of God.

Epaphras knew the believers in Colosse well and was aware of the present state of their faith. He noticed that the Lord Jesus no longer had the prime place in their hearts. What could he do for their restoration? Being a fellow-prisoner with the apostle Paul in Rome, he was unable to visit them (cf. Philemon v. 23).

Epaphras was able to pray for them, however. He called upon God incessantly and intensively for them, and in doing so their spiritual health concerned him most. They needed full knowledge of the Christian truth, so as to lead their lives correspondingly and convincingly with Christ at the centre.

Epaphras' example challenges us. What do we do, when we notice that a brother in the faith is adopting worldly ideas, or a sister in the faith is losing interest in the Word of God? Maybe we attempt to draw their attention lovingly to the dangers. Yet our prayer is the most important thing. Like Epaphras let us pray persistently and urgently for them, so that their hearts are drawn back to the Lord Jesus, and they orientate their lives according to the Word of God.

Today's reading: Job 28:1-28 · Acts 13:42-52

Don't be dismissive

By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.' Proverbs 13:10 NKJV
