August 24, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 60 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:8, 10 If we read only the first sentence of today's verses, the way back to God appears to be extremely easy. We need only draw near to Him, and everything is all right; He draws near to us. That is indeed what it says here. However, one cannot separate the first part of the verse from the second. God will not draw near to us if we simply overlook defilement and sin in our lives. God is holy and righteous: He cannot tolerate sin in His presence. But here He shows us a way by which we can meet Him. The moment we draw near to God, the question arises whether our moral state is suitable for His presence. How can we approach Him with unwashed hands and defiled hearts? Among those addressed by James' epistle there was sin, inconstancy and much indifference. They needed cleansing, not just outwardly (their hands), but inwardly (their hearts). How? By confessing their sins frankly and humbling themselves. Because the epistle of James is part of the eternal Word of God, these verses apply to us, too. How far have our hearts got from God! We feel that we cannot possibly draw near to God as we are. Then let us follow the way shown. Access to Him is available for all who confess their sins, whether known or concealed in a humble attitude. All who do so will experience His cleansing and forgiveness and then enjoy fellowship with God. |

He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More |
