August 26, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 62 When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence. Deuteronomy 22:8 In the warm climate of the land of Canaan, houses were built with flat roofs, for the inhabitants frequently sat up there. How important it was, therefore, to erect a protective balustrade! Our faithful God thought of every need of His people, and at the same time gives us spiritual instruction. If we compare the building of a house with starting a family, we can see that the roof indicates our heavenly calling while the parapet reminds us of the dangers of the world. We are, like our Lord, in the world but we do not belong to it. If we are to grasp our heavenly privileges and live in them, then we must keep ourselves distinct from the world. That is why God has given us His Word which is our protection if we follow its instruction sincerely and obediently. This gives parents, both father and mother, a profitable, yet earnest responsibility. If the Word of God is not the family's standard for everything, if our thinking and conduct are not directed by it, then the parapet is missing! This stresses the importance of the parents' example. We must acquaint our children with God's thoughts. However, they will only take them to heart in so far as they see the effect Scripture has on the parents. Let us therefore take the entire Word of God seriously and put it into practice in our daily life, both its promises and blessings and also its urgent warnings so that no one in the family comes to harm. |
