Whoever reads the biblical reports of the crucifixion of...

The people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God.
Luke 23:35.

Whoever reads the biblical reports of the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus must surely conclude that there is no limit to man's wickedness. The Saviour's tormentors didn't even stop insulting Him when He was already hanging on the cross, suffering dreadful pain. They mocked Him by contemptuously demanding that He should save Himself. That would prove to them that He was truly the Christ, the Redeemer promised by God. They stated that "He saved others".

Let us meditate briefly on these words. For how many people did the Lord Jesus devote His life on this earth! He was constantly active for others, without thinking of Himself. He had not come "to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).

According to those torturing the Lord, He had indeed saved others. They acknowledged His countless miracles to free sick or handicapped people from their sorry state. He had even raised the dead to life and thus given impressive proof of His power as the Son of God.

We can only understand the word "saved" correctly, if we contrast it with the word "lost" in its biblical sense. The main problem mankind has is not physical hindrances. "Lost" in the Bible signifies the moral state of man before God and his eternally unalterable destiny, far from God, if he dies without the forgiveness of his sins.

The Lord Jesus therefore remained on the cross, instead of freeing Himself from that situation. He gave His life as "a ransom for many".

Today's reading: Habakkuk 1:1-17 · Mark 10:1-12

Know When To Say Nothing
