The young Child and His mother

Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh.

God sent forth his Son, born of a woman.

They saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him.

1 Timothy 3:16; Galatians 4:4; Matthew 2:11.

The young Child and His mother
The young child Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Some wise men from the east, aware of His birth through the presence of a star, came to worship the future King of the Jews. King Herod heard of Him and sought to kill Him out of jealousy, but God instructed Joseph how to keep "the young Child and His mother" safe. This touching expression is repeated insistently; it occurs five times in this chapter, underlining the fact that a young child needs its mother, and that God would not have them separated, for a child depends entirely on its mother for all its needs. And she feeds it and cares for it tenderly. Psalm 22 unveils prophetically the feelings of this new-born baby being suckled at His mother's breast. He addresses God, saying: "You are he who took me out of the womb. You made me trust while on my mother's breasts" (v. 9).

But this humble Child, born of a woman as we all were, is also the Son of the Highest, the Son of God (Luke 1:32.35). This new-born weakling was none other than the Creator of the universe. And although He was laid in a crib to rest, He was in control of the stars and galaxies, "upholding all things by the word of his power" (Hebrews 1:3). He created all things through His intelligence, and through His authority they subsist.

The unparalleled humiliation of our Creator as to His birth in the humble cradle in Bethlehem is "the mystery of godliness", truly a great mystery!

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
