September 11, 2015 Today's reading: Psalm 84 & 85 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18 "My guilt is too great and cannot be forgiven!" Whoever says such a thing senses how great a burden the guilt of a life is and wishes to be free of it. There is no recognition of how forgiveness can be attained. Yet there is forgiveness for such a person, if not with mankind, then certainly with God! The story of Kin Hyun is an example of it. As a 19-year-old girl, Kim was enlisted by the North Korean secret service. After completing her training as a spy, she was given her first task, and she carried it out in blind obedience: she blew up a South Korean plane with 115 passengers on board in the air. The political leadership had thought the terrorist act would prevent the 1988 Olympic Games taking place in Seoul. Kim Hyun was arrested; her death sentence was eventually reduced to life imprisonment. But there is more to her story. Kim was visited in prison by a preacher. He told her how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, had borne the punishment of the guilt of sinful persons in His atoning death on the cross. He added that God therefore now offers everyone grace and forgiveness. Kim was astounded over such news that brought freedom; but at first she thought that owing to her great guilt, she did not deserve any grace. That is the great thing about grace: none of us deserves it! When Kim became aware that God loved her and wished to save her, she confessed her guilt to Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ, she obtained forgiveness and peace for her conscience. |
