September 13, 2015 Today's reading: Psalm 88 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Acts 13:22-25 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (108) In his sermon in the Synagogue at Antioch, Paul explained how God had led His people gloriously. But then the nation demanded a king. However, king Saul proved to be a self-willed man who did not heed God's commands. So his kingdom did not last. . In place of a king that the people desired came the king after God's heart. God Himself had "raised" him: He designated him for this office and called him to it. It was David, who was also to be an ancestor of the Messiah. Much in his life pointed to Christ. After David, Paul immediately referred to the "Son of David", the promised Saviour. His listeners were looking for the fulfilment of this age-old promise of God's. Now Paul brought them the good news: the Saviour had actually come. He was Jesus of Nazareth! First, John the Baptist had announced His coming and called on the people to repent. They should change their ways and sincerely turn to God so as to enter the kingdom of the Messiah. Then the Messiah they longed for Himself came to His people. (to be continued next Sunday) |
