“Say the word!”

I am the LORD. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass.
Ezekiel 12:25.

"Say the word!"
When Jesus was once in the town of Capernaum, He met a delegation of the elders of the Jewish religion. They asked Him to heal a sick person who was dying. The one concerned was a servant, and his master was a heathen officer. How would Jesus react? He "was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel", as He said later.

How did this foreign centurion come to deserve such a friendly gesture? He had undoubtedly shown the Jewish people much benevolence, as they testified when they told the Lord Jesus that he was worthy of it, "for he loves out nation, and has built us a synagogue" (Luke 7:4.5).

The centurion himself sent a totally different message to the Lord: "I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to you." Then his faith shone forth: "But say the word, and my servant will be healed" (vv. 6.7).

One word would suffice for the centurion. He was convinced that, if Jesus spoke it, his servant would be cured. Jesus marvelled at that. He had not found such faith even in Israel. So how could He remain unmoved? The messengers sent by that man of faith returned to find the sick person in good health.

Faith honours God, and God honours faith: "Those who honour me, I will honour" (1 Samuel 2:30).

Today's reading: Exodus 8:1-20 · Luke 3:1-14

NEGATIVE LIVING

Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory....More
