Help for your marriage

‘Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your reward for all your earthly toil.’ Ecclesiastes 9:9 NLT

Love and marriage can be hard to define, but this time-tested description captures it beautifully: “Love is friendship that has caught fire. It’s quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing, and forgiving. It’s loyalty through good times and bad. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weakness.” Real love is patient and present. It looks forward with hope and refuses to dwell on the past. It’s made up of everyday moments, irritations, compromises, disappointments, victories, and the commitment to keep moving forward together. The Bible says, “Relish life with the spouse you love…every day…Make the most of each one!”

Marriage isn’t about having it all together. It’s about walking through life side by side, trusting that love and grace will fill the gaps. If you have love, it can make up for what you don’t have. But if you don’t, no matter what else you have, it won’t be enough. To make your marriage work, follow these five rules:

(1) Don’t yell. If you need to raise your voice, let it be for something truly urgent.

(2) Put your spouse first. Choose their honour over your own.

(3) Prioritise each other over everything, and speak words of encouragement every day.

(4) Greet each other warmly. Never go to bed angry.

(5) Own your mistakes. Talk things through and forgive quickly.

Marriage was God’s idea. So if you’re struggling, don’t carry it alone. Bring your heart to Him in prayer. He knows how to help. And He will.

Soulfood: Eze 34-36 Matt 23:23-39 Ps 78:1-8 Pro 20:7-10
