Samson (6)—A Heart Issue

“No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb” … When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up once more, for he has told me all his heart.”
Judges 16:17–18

Samson (6)—A Heart Issue
Again and again Samson found himself in trouble on account of Philistine women. The Book of Proverbs, with its wise counsel, had not yet been written, but as a Nazirite of God, Samson should certainly have been on the alert. Alas, he was a Nazirite most of his life outwardly, but was his heart ever truly in this full dedication to God?

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23). When Scripture speaks of the heart it is not referring to the physical organ inside a person’s chest. The heart, as Scripture uses the term, is rather the seat of one’s feelings, affections, and understanding. The believer’s heart should be the Lord’s, but the world wants it, and delights to play upon the feelings and affections especially. So it was with Delilah. She realized, as she tried unsuccessfully to find out the secret of Samson’s great strength, that he was really just playing games with her and that his heart was not with her.

Delilah coaxed and pouted and pestered him until finally he told her all his heart. She recognized that he had done so. Now she had him where she wanted him! She called the Philistine lords to come with the reward she had earned. Lulling him to sleep on her knees, she had a man shave the seven locks of his head. Is our heart wholly the Lord’s or for another?

O keep my soul, then, Jesus,
Abiding still with Thee;
And if I wander, teach me
Soon back to Thee to flee.

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
