Gateway Church Founder Released From Oklahoma Jail

A prominent Texas megachurch founder faces serious allegations of child sexual abuse, leading to a guilty plea and sentencing.

Gateway Church Founder Released From Oklahoma Jail

Gateway Church, with locations across Texas and founded by Robert Morris, has been recognized for helping others connect with God, find community, and deepen their faith. A recent scandal, however, has put the church's reputation in jeopardy.

In October of 2025, the Texas megachurch founder, Robert Morris, pleaded guilty to child sex abuse and was sentenced to 6 months in jail. The case stemmed from 55-year-old Cindy Clemishire, who said that the pastor abused her when she was just 12 years old. Though the abuse took place in the 1980s, Clemishire hoped that sharing her story now would “help lift up others' shame and allow them to speak up.”

While Morris confessed to five counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child and agreed to a 10-year suspended sentence (including registering as a sex offender), he was released from Osage County jail in Oklahoma on Monday, March 30th, 2026, after just 6-months of time.

According to the Dallas Morning News and court documents, “Morris’ probationary supervision was transferred to the state of Texas, where he will serve the remainder of the 10-year sentence on probation. As part of the plea deal, he also agreed to pay $270,000 to the woman who accused him of abusing her as a child in the 1980s, Cindy Clemishire.”

Upon hearing of the release, Clemishire notes that she’s still grateful for the truth being brought to light. Using her pain as a reason to help others, she added that she will “continue to stand for truth, for justice, and for every survivor who is still finding their voice,” she told MSN.

In a statement to the public and Cindy, Morris reflects on the harm he’s caused his church, his family, and his God: “I have thought a great deal about what it means that this was brought to a legal resolution. At first, that was a hard thing to handle. But the more time I spent in that jail cell, the more clearly I could see that what the Clemishire family set in motion was an act of integrity, and that it gave me something I needed - a moment of true reckoning in the eyes of the law, not just in my own heart or before God. It opened my eyes to things I had not fully seen.”

Although Morris resigned from his position at Gateway Church in 2024 after the case went public, the church is still attempting to function and recover since the incident.
