Gen Z Really Does Have It Different

Generation Z navigates a unique set of challenges, from the constant pressure of social media comparison and personal branding to information overload and blurred work-life boundaries.

Gen Z Really Does Have It Different

As someone who has written about Generation Z being a unique cohort due to several defining dynamics, it might serve other generations to remember just how different they really do have it. Here are just a few of their unique challenges, compiled by WealthGang, to keep in mind:

1. Constant Comparison on Social Media

Imagine the difficulty of seeing carefully curated versions of your peers on a daily basis, while remaining satisfied with your own reality.

2. Pressure to Build a Personal Brand Early

When I was 12 years old, I was not thinking about how I could stand out, or create content, or define my reality online.

3. Information Overload

Generation Z has access to virtually limitless amounts of information, but almost no wisdom. Endless content, views, and opinions make it difficult to focus and process what actually does matter.

4. Blurred Work/Life Boundaries

While remote work, freelancing, and online opportunities are new to older generations, for Generation Z, they have been ever-present in their world and have made it harder to fully disconnect.

5. Fear of Missing Out

Everyone has a certain amount of FOMO (fear of missing out), but the scale to which Generation Z has faced it is without parallel. It goes back to the impact of social media. You’re not simply exposed to your immediate social circle, but rather to what everyone is doing all the time.

6. Shortened Attention Span

It’s now been studied and proven that constant stimulation from apps and short-form content has changed how people focus and consume information.

7. Economic Uncertainty at a Young Age

Rising costs and unstable job markets make financial independence feel much harder to reach. (Have you seen house prices lately?)

8. Dating Through Apps

If you told me as a young adult that relationships would one day be shaped by swipes, algorithms, and endless options, I would have had absolutely no sense of what you were talking about. Nor would I have been able to see how disposable it would make any and all connections.

9. Mental Health Awareness and Pressure

It’s good that we have become more aware of mental health issues and feel the freedom to pursue treatment. What has yet to be determined is how healthy it is to constantly analyze, label, and attempt to optimize any and all emotions.

10. Identity in a Hyper Visible World

While self-expression is “up,” so are judgment and feedback. And that judgment and feedback can not only be swift, but also savage.

All to say, Gen Z really does have a few challenges earlier generations just didn’t have to face.
