A remarkable display of unity and faith emerged at the World Cup when opposing teams, France and England, gathered for a powerful post-match prayer that quickly went viral.

Players on Opposing World Cup Teams Go Viral for Joining Together in Prayer

A World Cup tournament marked by bold expressions of faith ended with one of its most memorable moments Saturday, when members of France and England – opposing teams – gathered at midfield in prayer following the third-place match.

The scene stood in sharp contrast to the scuffle that marred the end of Sunday’s championship game, but it also stood out for its remarkable display of unity.

Although it was common throughout the tournament for teams and individual players to pray postgame, it was far less common to see members of opposing teams come together in prayer.

Seven members of the England and France squads gathered at midfield to pray after England’s thrilling 6-4 victory. The group included French midfielder Michael Olise and defender Maxence Lacroix, along with England defender Marc Guéhi, forward Bukayo Saka and defender Trevoh Chalobah.

The Fox News broadcast captured the inspiring moment – and it quickly went viral.

Saka led England with three goals, giving his country its best World Cup finish since its title in 1966. He frequently references his faith on his social media pages – and he points upward, as if to God, when he scores.

Chalobah told The Guardian that his Christian faith gives him peace on the field.

“That’s what I build on,” he said. “No matter what happens, I know I have a foundation that I can lean on. Because of my faith, I know that those moments won’t define me. I just use them as fuel to always prove people wrong, and I love it.”

Faith is also central to France defender Maxence Lacroix, who previously told The Guardian that he is unashamed to share his Christian faith with teammates at his English Premier League club, Crystal Palace.

“We have a lot of Christians in this team, and I said when we have a lot of Christians, normally Christianity is a big family,” Lacroix said of Crystal Palace. “I said before games, we come and we put this game into the hands of God and we pray together. We have done this since the first games I’m here. I think a lot of guys wanted it but didn’t know how to do it. I said let’s do it and now it’s normal.”

He described himself as the “pastor” of Crystal Palace.

“I speak a lot about Jesus, about God. I love God,” he said. “... I try my best to spread the Word.”

The host American team also made faith a visible part of its World Cup run. Although the United States was eliminated in the Round of 16, it won the hearts of fans with its spirited play and repeated postgame prayer gatherings.

Spain defeated Argentina, 1-0, in Sunday’s championship game.
