Chip designer Nvidia has said it will stop sending high-end artificial intelligence chips to China after the U.S. accelerated a deadline for shipping the chips.

According to The Guardian, initially, the restrictions on shipping were slated to go into effect 30 days after Oct. 17, but the U.S. recently announced new measures that would stop countries such as China, Iran, and Russia from receiving the AI chips.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has not commented on the change, but semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices confirmed it, too, would be abiding by the new restrictions.

Intel, which began selling its Gaudi 2 chips in China in the summer, said it was "reviewing the regulations and assessing the potential impact."

The new rules, announced last week, impact chips that have a "total processing performance" of 4800 or more and are "designed or marketed for [a] data center."

Five of Nvidia's chips are affected by the rules, including, but not limited to, the A100, A800, H100, H800, and L40S, Nvidia said in a filing.

The A800 and the H800 were created specifically for China to comply with previous limits the U.S. imposed in 2022.

The A800 chip was a modified version of Nvidia's A100 but boasted a lower chip-to-chip data transfer rate of 400 gigabytes per second. In 2022, U.S. rules restricted rates of 600 gigabytes per second and up.

Nvidia is the leader in the market for artificial intelligence computing chips. The company is also broadening to design central processing units (CPUs) for Windows operating systems, using technology from Arm Holdings.

The move is part of Microsoft's response to Apple, which boasts its own Arm-based chips in its Mac computers.

Apple's custom chips have given Mac computers better battery life and faster performance than other rival chips.

Nvidia's PC chips could be sold for PCs as soon as 2025, according to Reuters.
