The God of All Comfort

Bible in a Year : Judges 1-3, Luke 4:1-30

We can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
2 Corinthians 1:4

Today's Scripture & Insight : 2 Corinthians 1:3-11

Five devastating miscarriages led Zoe and Andy to share God’s love with other grieving couples. Reflecting on the stories of loss, hope and healing they have witnessed, Zoe says, “I don’t believe God allows us to go through painful experiences in order that we can use those experiences for good. . . . [But God] can turn that pain into something beautiful.” She concludes, “God has turned my pain into purpose.”

Zoe echoes the words of the apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, where he addressed the issue of shared suffering and the comfort we find in God. When we face troubles, the “God of comfort” will comfort us, “so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:4). Just as believers in Christ share in His sufferings, so also our comfort abounds through Him (v. 5).

Paul doesn’t downplay his and others’ troubles, such as the “great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure” that led them to despair (v. 8). But these crushing experiences also caused them to lean more fully on God as they set their hope on Him and depended on the prayers of their fellow believers (vv. 10–11).

Whatever kind of loss or suffering we’re going through, we know that the God of all comfort promises to help us to endure it with patience and grace. We can set our hope on Him.

Reflect & Pray
How has God comforted someone as you’ve shared your experiences with them? How can you set your hope on God when you face disappointment, loss and pain?

God of all comfort, I look to You when I feel agony and loss. Reassure me, and help me to pass on Your love and grace to others.

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
