Tears of Love

Bible in a Year : Judges 13-15, Luke 6:27-49

Jesus wept.
John 11:35

Today's Scripture & Insight : John 11:17-44

I was choked up that Saturday evening when I had to say goodbye to my daughters. I didn’t think it would be so hard, empty nesting a second time round. After all, the girls had previously been away at university and had now secured jobs they really wanted. But leaving them in a distant town and heading home to a house lacking their life—and their mess—touched me deeply.

Jesus too was overcome with emotion the day he went to visit Martha and Mary in Bethany. He already knew that the Father was going to do an amazing miracle through Him (see John 11:4, 11) and raise His friend, Lazarus, from the dead (vv. 33-34). He had thus deliberately delayed when Lazarus’ sisters asked Him to come (v. 6). But when he arrived He felt their pain deeply, being intensely affected by their grief. “Jesus wept” (v. 35) may be the shortest verse in the Bible but is one of the most profound. Jesus wasn’t being weak when He cried; He was expressing His humanity and love, just as He demonstrated His divinity and power when He raised Lazarus.

To stand silently with someone in pain and shed tears can be a greater act of love than uttering many words, as my daughters knew from my wet eyes that evening. What consolation to know that God also draws alongside us, empathising with us in our sorrows.

Reflect & Pray
How could you show your love to someone today? In what ways has God revealed His love and compassion to you this week?

Dear God, thank You for loving me in so many ways. Help me to empathise and show my love to others too.

ACCEPTED TIME 2

God is never too early and He is never too late. His timetable is set on purpose; the purpose is not only for your sake but also for His. In all things, His name shall be glorified. No doubt, He would have been glorified healing Lazarus of his sickness, but this can't compare to raising him from the dead after four...More

IMPEDIMENTS TO PRAYER

. He is looking for those who are ready and committed to walking in His footsteps. God is holy, and He has called us to holy living. We are to do as He commands because we are the light of the world. God in Heaven is glorified when our light shines in the midst of the darkness of this world. If you...More

Standing in the limelight

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern for all who are going to believe on him for everlasting life.
1 Timothy 1:15.16.
