Bible in a Year : 1 Chronicles 7-9, John 6:22-44

He knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.
Job 23:10

Today's Scripture & Insight : Job 23:1-12

Andy moved around when he was a child, from Zimbabwe to Sheffield to Bristol, and struggled with social anxiety and making friends. “I had a lump in my throat every day and I couldn’t speak. I was quiet as a mouse, which wasn’t my personality.” Each day he’d cry, not knowing how to change.

Then one day he opened the Old Testament to Job’s story, and the words felt like a revelation to him: “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10). With this, Andy understood that even though he was going through a dark time, yet his character would be formed by it: “I would be a gold person!”

Andy read from Job’s story, the Bible’s famous account of suffering—and of God’s redeeming love. In it, Job shares with his friends about his yearnings for God: “If only I could go to his dwelling!” (v. 3). Although he longs to find Him in the silence, Job trusts that God loves him and is at work in his life; that through the challenges he’ll come forth as gold (v. 10).

So too for Andy. Through God’s love he grew in confidence, slowly making friends and becoming more himself. So too for us—we can trust that God will shape our character by His love as our feet closely follow His steps (v. 11).

Reflect & Pray
When you look back at trials in your life, how can you trace God’s love and grace in them? How have you changed as you’ve followed Christ?

Loving God, I don’t always know why hard and horrible things happen, but I trust that You are good, gracious and kind.

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
