Hope Even When Life Hurts

Bible in a Year : Psalms 60-62, Romans 5

We boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:2

Today's Scripture & Insight : Romans 5:1-11

“Hey friends,” wrote much-loved Christian comedian Steve Legg on Facebook just five days before he died in 2024. “I wanted to let you know that I came into hospital in an ambulance on Tuesday (which was exciting), because I was in a lot of pain (less exciting).” The doctors had predicted that an inoperable tumour on his bowel might be an “end-of-life event”. Yet Steve could testify in his final message, “God has been with us throughout.”

Steve Legg’s assurance in God during his last days resonated powerfully with these words from the apostle Paul: “We boast in the hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2). Our hope—our deep confidence in God and a place with Him in His home—is rock solid, even when life is crumbling around us. “[This] hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (v. 5).

Such hope can remain strong, even during suffering, because it comes from “Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” (v. 11). We are bound to God by His Spirit, which means that we too might be able to say, “God has been with us throughout”—even in the most desperate of times.

Whatever today holds, no trial can ambush us where God won’t be right here with us. No darkness will prove our hope false.

Reflect & Pray
When have you experienced God’s presence in a fiery trial? What does it look like for you to “boast in the hope of the glory of God”?

Heavenly Father, it is so good to know that You are with me throughout everything I face or may face. Thank You that my hope is rock-solid and secure in Jesus.

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
