True Refuge

Bible in a Year : Psalms 72-73, Romans 9:1-15

I take refuge in you.
Psalm 25:20

Today's Scripture & Insight : Psalm 25:16-21

The lights flickered and went dark as the fierce winter storm sent sheets of rain lashing through the night. Our loch was whipped into a frenzy of huge waves that smashed into next door’s seawall, flipping tons of water into their garden with each impact, totally obliterating it. How ironic that a wall built for protection should become the cause of so much damage!

But isn’t life like that too? We build protective walls in our hearts when people hurt or disappoint us, adding more bricks each time this happens, blocking others out a little more. But those walls, intended to protect, so often lead to more conflict, loneliness and hurt as we struggle to truly connect.

It’s our instinct to forge our own defences. But the image of my neighbour’s wall destroying their property reminds me how easy it is for our efforts to backfire. Instead, I want to cry out to God like the psalmist, “Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you” (Psalm 25:20).

In God’s presence we find One who understands all the dangers surrounding us (vv. 16-19), and who gives us a place of refuge that will never put us to shame. As we trust in His loving protection, we will find that we don’t need to build our own defences, for “his faithfulness will be [our] shield and rampart” (Psalm 91:4).

Reflect & Pray
What defences have you put up in your heart? How can today’s verse help you trust God to be your refuge instead?

Dear God, thank You for the image in Scripture of You being my safety, my refuge, my fortress, my shield. May I truly experience this as I walk with You today.

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

REWARD FOR LABOUR

Jacob sojourned with Laban and laboured for him for several years. At first, his host was cheating him at every opportunity, and the years of his hard labour were almost in vain. Down the line, God had to intervene to enable Jacob eat the fruit of his labour. For a reader of this devotional, in every area that you...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"
