Comfort and Renewal

Bible in a Year : Psalms 113-115, 1 Corinthians 6

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Matthew 5:4

Today's Scripture & Insight : Matthew 5:1-10

Returning home to Australia, Jacqueline had to say goodbye to her mother at Heathrow Airport for what turned out to be the last time. In Departures, looking at her frail mum in the wheelchair, her heart filled with sadness. “Well, that’s it then,” her mother said simply. Jacqueline felt pained at this poignant public goodbye.

Four years later, Jacqueline found herself waiting at the very same place in Departures, and the memories and grief came flooding back. That opened her to a journey of exploring her pain before her heavenly Father, who eventually brought relief. She realised that the last words from her mother were actually those that she’d written on her birthday card, even though it only reached her in Australia after her mum died: “Lots of love from Mum.” God not only healed Jacqueline of her loss and pain, but helped her to see a new ending to the story.

When Jesus shared what has become known as the Sermon on the Mount, He promised that God would console the grieving: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). In this most famous talk, He turns the ways of the world upside down as He makes known how His Father’s world works. Including how He brings release to those who grieve the death of their family members. Trust that God through His Son extends to us that same comfort today.

Reflect & Pray
When has God changed your inner narrative about a painful situation that you’ve endured? In what areas of your life could you invite the Comforting Spirit to work?

God of all hope, renew my love for You. I know that You make all things new and that You are welcoming me home to You.

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
