A World of Mortals

Bible in a Year : Psalms 143-145, 1 Corinthians 14:21-40

Stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.
Titus 3:8

Today's Scripture & Insight : Titus 3:1-8

Who might you cross paths with today?

Apart from those you know and love, your list may look unremarkable. C. S. Lewis would challenge this notion, however. “There are no ordinary people,” he claims. His book The Weight of Glory anticipates eternity, where forever we will either enjoy God’s presence or be banished from Him. So, he reminds us, “It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours.”

I find this both challenging and convicting. It’s so easy to see the people around me as just that—people. Some friendly, some, frankly, annoying. But to see each person as an immortal being of infinite value? Surely that has to be the principle behind Paul’s instructions to Titus: “Remind the people . . . to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle towards everyone” (Titus 3:1-2).

We’re not to live like this out of duty or for some ‘greater good’. Rather, “These things are excellent and profitable for everyone” (v. 8) because they reveal the very heart of God. “When the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us” (vv. 4-5).

Everyone we meet today is immortal and valuable. Let’s seek the Lord so that we might reflect His “kindness and love”, inviting immortal souls to find eternal rest in Him.

Reflect & Pray
Do you view people with an eternal perspective? How can you let God’s kindness and love shape your heart more and more towards others?

Heavenly Father, thank You for saving me by Your mercy, because of Your love and kindness. Help me to remember that this salvation is available to every person I meet today.

. He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only.
However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
