Creator Over the Created

When you look up to the sky . . . do not [worship] things the Lord your God has apportioned. Deuteronomy 4:19

Today's Scripture
Deuteronomy 4:12-19

Today's Devotion
Astrology is booming. Millions visit horoscope websites every month, especially younger generations. People joke about Mercury retrograde, compare zodiac signs to animals and movie characters, and read daily predictions as casually as weather reports—hoping the stars will help explain their problems or predict their future. But when we look to the heavens for answers, we forget the One who put each star in place.

In Deuteronomy 4:19, Moses warned Israel not to lift their eyes to the sky and be seduced into worshiping “the sun, the moon and the stars.” This came in the context of renewing His special covenant relationship with His people (v. 23). They’d heard His voice at Mount Sinai (v. 12), they’d received His “decrees and laws” (v. 14), and they were about to enter the promised land (see ch. 31). God reminded them that the heavenly bodies were created for all the nations to see, not for them to worship (v. 19). His people weren’t to adore creation over the Creator. Scripture is blunt. Idolatry always enslaves. But only God—not constellations—can reveal truth and direct history.

Instead of searching horoscopes as some choose to do, let’s “seek the Lord [our] God” (v. 29). He alone gives wisdom, guidance, and the security we long for.

Reflect & Pray
When are you tempted to bow down to someone or something other than God? What are some ways you can cling to Christ, knowing He alone holds your future?

Dear God, when I’m tempted to trust the stars, please help me to remember that, if I did, I would be abandoning You, their maker.

Today's Insights
Deuteronomy (which means “second law”) is the final of the five books of Moses, referred to as the Pentateuch or the Torah. It comes at the end of Israel’s forty years of wilderness wanderings (Deuteronomy 1:3; see Numbers 14:33-34; 32:13; Joshua 5:6). As the children of Israel were preparing to enter the promised land, Moses rehearsed the law for them as a reminder of their covenant with Jehovah. This law, which was given four decades earlier at Mount Sinai, now needed to be embraced by a new generation because the earlier generation had passed away in the wilderness. Moses warned against idolatry (Deuteronomy 4:15-20) and worshiping creation over the Creator (v. 19). After reviewing the law with the people, he commissioned Joshua as the nation’s new leader (31:23) and departed to Mount Nebo (32:48-50) where he died (34:5). As Moses reminded the Israelites to worship only their Creator, we too must worship God alone, for He gives wisdom and guidance.
