Table Graces

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. Titus 3:5

Today's Scripture
Titus 3:3-8

Today's Devotion
One Thanksgiving, Mark accepted a dinner invitation from fellow seminary students although he’d been feeling overwhelmed and was having suicidal thoughts. But he went anyway, and when he saw the tables brimming with food, he was struck by the creativity of the preparations. He saw the casseroles and other dishes as acts of hope; through the love and efforts of others preparing them, he realized that the world was a different place than what he’d imagined. He remarked, “When I got home, things had radically changed.” Put simply, “They saved my life.”

How God saves us through His grace is mysterious and amazing, and it varies according to the individual. As the apostle Paul wrote to Titus, God saves us because of His kindness and love, “not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Titus 3:5). He bestows the Holy Spirit “generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life” (vv. 6-7).

The seminarians acted as God’s conduit of grace to Mark that day. We never fully know how God might minister to others through us, whether through an invitation for a meal, an encouraging letter as Paul wrote, or through prayer. In a multitude of ways, God generously lavishes His love on us.

Reflect & Pray
How has God poured out His love in your life? What steps might you take to reach out to others with God’s love?

God of all mercy, please help me share Your gifts of kindness and love with others.

Today's Insights
Titus, Paul’s gentile convert and protégé (Galatians 2:1), traveled with him on his missionary journeys (Titus 1:4). Paul had left Titus in Crete to strengthen the church (v. 5)—to teach believers how to live lives that honored Jesus, to set standards for leadership (ch. 1), and to encourage Christ-honoring and gracious behaviors within the church family and the unbelieving community (chs. 2-3). Paul reminds us that “[God] saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (3:5). We’re “justified by his grace” (v. 7). We’re not saved by our good works, but we’re saved so we can do good works. Believers in Jesus are to “be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good” (v. 8). Today, we can ask God to show us how we can share His gifts of kindness and love with others.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
